Curator's Note

RainerGeist’s artistic process unfolds under a state of complete self-surrender.  There is no planning involved.  The works come to be with their shapes initiating in dreams or presenting themselves through inspiration.  He then transfers the shapes onto a surface - he prefers paper or papyrus - and allows his painting sessions to be guided, consciously bypassing his mental decision-making or planning faculties.  Any inkling of a judgment lurking prompts the need for cessation of artistic activity.  His works develop in a state of deep inner peace and contentment, embracing the feeling that they are not "his" works, as they originate in Source and are allowed to communicate directly with their viewers.

His paintings embody complexity. They are fully charged with energy and intensity expressed in the interaction of colours radiating through the ordered structures of the delicately asymmetric geometry.  Some of his works convey what can be perceived as an entity emanating through the emerging organic shapes.

Even though the geometry and organic shapes are apparently rendered in stillness, they nevertheless burst with luminosity, electric power, motion, and other dynamic processes.

RainerGeist offers two different avenues for intuitive reception of knowledge in his Dynamic Stillness series. The first one, represented by works that produce a vessel, relies on the ordered structures built through an arrangement of geometric shapes, as can be seen for example in Numbers 13 through 21. The vessel orders and radiates its meaning as it reaches out to the viewer.  Vessel is understood as that which contains and transports - a carrier symbolizing receptivity that can be filled with meaning.  The carrier functions as a conduit of energy.  The works welcome the viewer with a full charge.

The second avenue, which can be referred to as works embodying a presence, relies on an arrangement of organic forms acting in concert, allowing for the emergence of an entity that invites interaction - participation in the underlying oneness from which everything springs.  Examples of the presence type of works are Numbers 1 to 12.

There are a few works which seem to share in both avenues but in varying degrees. Number 7, for example, appears to be a vessel in its repetitive and coherent geometric units. However, those same units are morphing into irregular and organic, apparent biological cells composing different kinds of tissue that as a whole seem to manifest an organism directly engaging the viewer.

The tension between the physical stillness of the work and the dynamic processes seen within constitutes the realm in which content and meaning are exchanged.  This tension illustrates the paradoxes of individuality and onenness, inner and outer, form and formlessness, the human and the transcendent.  Nevertheless, through surrender, the paradoxes and the tension can be dissolved.

RainerGeist’s paintings therefore invite the viewer to surrender to the dynamic and vibrating nature of the paintings. Through intuitive observation, the deeper meaningful qualities of the works reach the viewer, transmitting a body of knowledge along with the same creative power that produced the image.
